<Karma Boxes>
By Chen Shuhe Yue & Angela Tse
New York 2024
"As civilization progresses, the Earth is dying unnoticed, crying out in a faint voice while displaying life and trauma. Every step humanity is taking now heralds the inevitable consequences that await. The installation comprises seven boxes, each representing a theme. Five boxes correspond to the five Chinese elements: Metal (Heaven), Fire (Hell), Earth (Death), Wood (De-forest), and Water (Melting). The other two boxes represent Yin (Negative) and Yang (Positive); Yin symbolizes destruction, while Yang signifies redemption. Audiences are invited to enter these seven spaces to experience each theme."

<Between Walls >
Installation with Yang Qin, Electronics, and Projection
In January 2022, a video drew attention to the trafficking and abuse of women in China. In the video, a woman is chained around her neck, locked in a closed room, with her teeth missing and mentally disturbed, while she is the mother of eight children. There is much evidence to prove she was abducted and sold to Xuzhou 20 years ago, but for unknown reasons, the case died along with the arrest of some of the rescuers. There are tens of thousands and more women like her who have been trafficked to this region from all over the country. But the area's remoteness and the local community's solidarity make rescue very difficult.
The idea of this work was to call attention to the problem of women trafficking. Between the walls we cannot see, there is a large group of people suffering. They long for someone outside to break the walls that imprison them. The more attention we give, the more chances to save them from hell.
< TYPE >
TYPE is a sound installation with a simple pre-set wireless keyboard and a portable speaker. The pre-set keys are related to a programming MAX patch with many sound samples. Some of those samples are connected with each other so that they can show a complete sound story when people put in a certain phrase. (eg. “The world has abandoned me“) And also people can explore more sound stories of their own by triggering those words. The numbers are set with pitches in pentatonic mode. It’s easy to get beautiful melodies in any order. The directions are greeting voice samples, set for actively interacting with passers-by.
